Generally, embalming is not required by law. However, many states do require a body to be embalmed or refrigerated within a certain period of time after death has occurred. Some funeral homes may have an embalming requirement for certain types of arrangements, such as when there will be a public viewing of the deceased. You always have the option of selecting an immediate disposition arrangement that does not require embalming.
